WORK OF FOUR DECADES (2000)

Garry Neill Kennedy: Work of Four Decades is a retrospective exhibition organized jointly by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS) (Jan. 29 - Mar. 26, 2000) and the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) (Nov. 3, 2000 - Jan. 21, 2001) demonstrating the variety of process-oriented, conceptual projects Garry undertook during the first four decades of his artistic career.

Curated by John Murchie, this exhibition includes over 80 works from paintings, drawings and wall works to artist books, photographs and site-specific installations. At both the AGNS and NGC, as well as Beaverbrook Art Gallery (Fredericton, NB) where the work toured in 2001, Kennedy reproduced various murals including Figure Paintings (1984) a wall works which looks at the relational positions of North American countries, the dominance of American cultural and military presence, and the domination of figurative painting in the 1980s; The Four Seasons (1998) a series of paintings determined by the "seasonal" market paint names of various colours; Finchwell Continued (1985) a series of shouting boss' heads painted from newspaper cartoons; and Superstar Shadow (1986) a work in which he used the titular font to paint his name from floor to ceiling around the exhibition space.
