David Bellman Gallery Work: View from the Gallery Window (1981)
David Bellman Gallery Work: View from the Gallery Window continues Kennedy's interventions in the gallery space. For this work Kennedy created an exhibition for himself without the gallery’s knowledge or permission. He had an exhibition announcement card made —a facsimile of the standard gallery invitation card—announcing his show, View from the Gallery Window. When viewers entered the gallery and looked out the window, the work they saw was a painted advertisement for ENOS “Fruit Salt” resting in situ on the adjacent building.
As Kennedy notes:
"The exhibition announcement card and the photograph of the painted ENOS wall advertisement do not fully describe the exhibition. A missing element is that no approval was sought or obtained from the gallery before I held the exhibition. A review in Vanguard magazine by Gerald Ferguson disclosed this fact. Rick Day was the designer who produced the facsimile of the David Bellman Gallery announcement."
