"e" (1980)

"e" is a temporary administrative intervention which took place at eye level gallery from June 23 - July 1, 1980. For this exhibition Kennedy removed the lower portion of the letter "e" from the gallery's typewriter. Over the course of the show, all the correspondence the gallery staff carried out was copied and placed in the exhibition space, with every "e" on each of the typed sheets missing its lower half. The sheets were subsequently amassed, bound, and presented as a book, published by eye level gallery, in 2006.

Part of Kennedy's early conceptual explorations of the inner workings of gallery and exhibition spaces, "e" uses the operational functions of the space as his framework. This work followed Kennedy's Revealing Locating (1979), a conceptual exploration into the archeology of the gallery space which he'd conducted at eye level the year prior, and is a predecessor to later works such as CORRECTIONS (Anna Leonowens Gallery, 2012) and HORIZONS (Vancouver Art Gallery, 1980/2024).
