Page 141 (1972)

In 1972, while President of and teaching at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD), Kennedy was invited to write a feature about educational innovation in Nova Scotia for the October issue of Studio International Journal of Modern Art. In response, he created Page 141.

While the other submissions on Art Education in both Canada and America were written in more conventional didactic forms, Kennedy's text about NSCAD was a listing of names of the entire school community at that time. He began by listing the maintenance staff, then continued on to current students, faculty and visitors, before listing the administrators at the end. Everyone listed is represented on the same scale, at the same level of importance. At the top of the page, he included a single photo of a set of oxen readied for a fair as a provincial symbol of pride.

This text based work highlights Kennedy's interest in presenting things as they are, threading art into daily life and setting up situations where the facts of daily life are put up for artistic consideration. This work also ties in with his longstanding practice of remembering and listing the names of the people in his life.

Kennedy re-visited this piece in 2002 when he was invited to make a lithographic print of this page work as  fundraiser for NSCAD.
